Juan COTUMBA tested positive for the use of Benzoylecgonine, methylecgonine, cocaine and metabolites during the Doble Sucre Potosi, in May 2006. He was suspended for 2 years by the UCI, until 28 June 2008.
Juan COTUMBA tested again positive, this time for the use of Furosimide, on 17 August 2014 in the Vuelta al Sud Bolivia. He was suspended by the UCI for 1 year, until 16 August 2015.
